Proposals have been granted permission for the provision of a 210-bed purpose-built student accommodation at Peppermill Court in York. Members of the Council's Planning Committee A voted to grant approval, subject to conditions, on the 2nd of February 2023.
Working alongside a team of consultants O’Neill Associates supported York St John’s University in the submission of the plans. The site was a former 24-bed mental health care facility which had become surplus to the NHS Trust’s requirements after the opening of Foss Park, the new 72-bed mental health hospital at Haxby Road.
Located off Ramsay Close, approximately 100m to the west of Huntington Road and 1km to the northeast of York city centre, the site was identified as a prime opportunity to be redeveloped for student accommodation, to meet the University’s growing student population. Accommodation on offer will be required by the University to be both reasonably priced and high quality, with adequate shared living space in every flat as well as accessible external communal space. The scheme will also capitalise on its accessible location to deliver a car-free development.
The final design resulted in a plan for 6 blocks of 3-storey accommodation arranged around linked landscape courtyards, to provide an attractive green setting for the development. The site will be managed and owned by the University and comprises of a mix of both ‘cluster’ accommodation and a range of self-contained studio’s with ancillary facilities to include Laundry, Social area, management suite and study zone.
