Conversion of former offices for expansion of Grand Hotel
In July 2015, the O'Neill Associates obtained planning permission on behalf of Splendid Hospitality Group for the conversion and extension of a large former office block to provide an additional 100 bed spaces for the Grade II listed 5* Grand Hotel, which occupies the adjoining site.
Roman House had lain empty for a number of years since it was vacated by Aviva in 2010. The exterior of the 35,000sq ft building had been poorly maintained and the interior was completely stripped out.
The redevelopment proposals included a new 160-seat dining pavilion at the rear of the existing hotel and 2 retail units on the ground floor of Rougier Street, York.
Architects Mackenzie Wheeler provided designs to breathe new life into the building and enhance the contribution it makes to the Historic Core Conservation Area.
The extension opened in 2018 doubling the provision of 5* rooms within York city centre.
