At the end of 2022, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of O’Neill Associates Ltd. It was a highly successful year for the practice, reaching important milestones on a number of key projects.
We continue to be heavily involved in the education sector, representing the University of York, YSJU, Askham Bryan College and St Peter’s School at the Local Plan Examination between May and September. We have also been appointed on the University of York’s Student Centre Project, working alongside Riba Gold Medal Award winning architects O’Donnell Tuomey and ADP to deliver a landmark building in the heart of the original campus.
As we entered the second year of our 5-year consultancy with the National Railway Museum, we gained reserved matters consent for Central Hall building. We also obtained planning permission for their second collections building at Locomotion in Shildon, Country Durham – the world’s first railway town.
The expansion of NRM was not the only significant tourism attraction in York to receive planning permission last year, with the team gaining permission for a major visitor attraction in the Roman Quarter on Rougier Street, as part of a large mixed use scheme. Other city centre projects for the practice include a new live music venue at Toft Green and the redevelopment of part of Coney Street including an exciting riverside walkway.
At a time when York’s house prices were rising at the fastest rate in the country, it was re-assuring to see works gathering pace on over 1000 new homes between our projects at Heworth Gas Works and Cocoa Works.
The practice also continues to represent a number of clients in the buoyant healthcare sector, with planning permissions for residential care schemes in Oadby, Leicester and in Acomb being awarded and the Wilbeforce Trust opening its new headquarters building on a former green belt site, which provides 30 state of the art apartments for the visually impaired.
Looking ahead, we have an exciting pipeline of projects for 2023 and we are all hoping to see the adoption of a new Local Plan for York in the Summer!
