64 bed hotel for historic York street
O’Neill Associates is delighted to have obtained planning consent on behalf of York-based developers North Star for a new 62-bed hotel with ground floor bar/restaurant on the historic street of Micklegate in the centre of York.
The practice worked over the course of 2 years in close collaboration with architects Vincent & Brown, heritage experts Montagu Evans and York City Council Design and Conservation Officers to progress proposals for replacement of buildings of low architectural and historic merit within a highly sensitive location in the Historic Core Conservation Area, close to the scheduled ancient monument and Grade 1 listed City Walls and Micklegate Bar and a number of listed buildings.
The approved scheme draws on the architectural language of jettied Medieval buildings, providing a contemporary interpretation of this historic style that will deliver a high-quality piece of architecture resonating with the distinctive character and history of the street.
Redevelopment of the site will provide a viable and sustainable use that increases the provision of high-quality accommodation in York, generating increased activity in Micklegate and helping to revitalise a key gateway to the city centre.
The application was recommended for approval by Council planning officers and approved at Committee on 17 September.
